Research:Purpose of a music video

This post is presenting the use of music videos in our modern day I will discuss how they appeal to the audience and help an artist to be successful. A music video is usually a main way of promoting an artist and their music whether the video is mainstream or alternative.

Purpose of the music video

music videos are used to showcase a genre of music, this is done using a captivating narrative, telling a story that the audience would want to watch. Or performance based where the artist is putting on a show within the video. usually when an artist makes a song there is a high demand for a music video. most artists get views on there videos by making it as controversial as possible. For example bellow is Lady Gaga's video Judas this video is very controversial because she involved a religious theme into her narrative. Judas in the bible was one of Jesus's disciples who deceived him so for many Christians this was a touching subject that Lady Gaga used for entertainment and success purposes. whether people hate it or not people still watch it and have an opinion on it.

Classic conventions

Classic conventions in a music video are characteristics that a music video usually have to help appeal to a wide audience. These things include the video being focused on the artist them self which is expected because it is their song and they are representing themselves as a product. They are usually stylish and modernised to help attract a bigger audience, the more mainstream the video is the more attention it will get. However when a video is alternative its purely made by the artist not to please anyone but to present their video in an artistic way. singers such as Madonna have a high profile within the music industry so she can afford to do so without anyone questioning her.

There is a rhythmic matching to the pace of the song so that the feelings of the song matches the video. In Rihanna's video 'Stay'

http://youtu.be/GlpiUsJ5v-c this is an example of a song with a soft piano melody so to match the video rhythmically its been slowed down.

A video is usually a chance for an artist to be experimental because when trying to impress the audience they have to make sure its different and creative. However there are still conventional uses of cinematography .When emotion of the artist is being shown in the video a close up shot is used example shown bellow. We see Rihanna sad and in disbelief from the close up shot.

Every video is normally fast paced skipping from scene to scene using each picture to represent the words within the song. There is a great mix between narrative and performance

Audience impact

Different audiences will be impacted by a music video depending on the content of the video. For example in the Rihanna video 'We found love' this video contains scenes of domestic violence, partying, overdosing drug and alcohol use, stealing and sex. A teenage audience would have more of an influential impact from the video because they idolise Rihanna and her beauty.Where as an adult audience are most likely to dislike the video and disagree with some of the themes she used.

Technology advancements

A lot of advanced technology is used to make music videos have that escapism feel to make it look believable and futuristic.
