Research:Goodwins theory of music videos

Goodwin has been involved in the music video industry and came up with 8 points that he said will make a music video successful if followed precisely.

Goodwin's theory 8 points

1) Genre characteristics
Music videos reflect their genre through the use of specific characteristics that makes it conventional.

2) Relationship between lyrics and visuals
There has to be a connection or match from what the words we hear (lyrics) to the shots and filming that makes up the actual music video. There are 3 ways in which the lyrics can be portrayed in a music video these are:
  • Illustrative- explaining the lyrics visuals
  • Amplifying- which is an exaggeration of the lyrics
  • Contradicting- opposite visuals to lyrics heard

3)Relationship between music and visuals
If the music is upbeat and happy the visuals are most likely to match that. However if the monotone, usually the visuals match that also.

4) Star image motifs
In a music video there are many close-up shots to create a connection with the star and the fans. When an artist is signed to a record label there is a high demand for a certain look or way in which you promote yourself.

5)Notion of looking
Female and male artists are used as sexual products to sell a certain sex appeal depending on the genre of music.

6)Intertexual reference
This when there is a link in a music videos to other films, TV programmes, news papers/reports and other well know videos. In this example bellow Madonna, Mia and Nicki Minaj are making a reference to Marilyn Monroe so therefore it is a intertexual reference.
7)Structure of the music video
A music video is either performance, narrative or concept-based or sometimes 2 or all 3 is used.
Performance- is strictly on the artist / band putting on a performance within the music video.
Narrative-The music video usually has a simple story that the audience can follow and understand.
Concept based-usually a music video doesn't make sense or is surreal and not mainstream this is usually used by the alternative genre.

8)Technical elements
These elements are all the things that a video should have:
  • mise en scene
  • editing
  • cinematography
  • sound
(two examples analasys of 2 music videos)

Conclusion: This theory is a good structure to follow when making your own video because it can be applied to all genres in music. I can now take Goodwin's theory and apply it to my music video in the future. It shows me that it should contain a good amount of visuals that helps amplify meaning to the lyrics. I also know that the pace of my editing should consistently follow the pace of the music whether slow for slow editing or fast for fast paced editing. Performance is needed to make the narrative clear to the audience and during this a lot of close-ups will be used to build a relationship with the artist. However know I know that I will not use intersexual references because they are too risky to use and I don't think I could build meaning from that.

  1. Good ideas here on Goodwin's theory. Each characteristic is defined generally.

    To improve;
-in genre characteristics, think of some genres and mention their characteristics.
-provide examples for each idea to illustrate your understanding further. Analyse these briefly
-what genres are more likely to display the notion of looking?
-be more specific to the technical elements, what do they need to do? For example, lighting to expose the artist. Editing to match the pace of the song.
